Falling for Fashion Week

Hiya, Monday. It was a supreme day in the city today- weather was top of the heap and I've got my windows open enjoying the cool night air. This is my favorite time of year hands down and I'm super stoked for the change of seasons. The city is buzzing with Fashion Week and the general Fall back to business thing- some may dread the end of Summer Fridays but I find the crunchy leaves and move from iced to hot coffee a dream, as well as sleepier and cooler mornings and a craving for Simon and Garfunkel or Van Morrison or the soundtrack from "Rushmore" or something equally cool and sedate.

I've been watching the shows online and there's some beautiful things. Thought I would share my Pinterest board with you so you can see some of my fav look so far- one distressing thing on the runway is a wedge haircut as shown below by Balmain, and also being rocked by superish Fredja and none other than our favorite "girl", Lena Dunham. I'm a bit scared of this do, I gotta say. I love short hair but the Dorothy Hamill thing is a force I'm not sure I want to reckon with. Do you?

Here's a link to my Fashion Week faves:

Oh and I also entered a contest through the Wall Street Journal to create a board of things that inspire us and stuff we would like to see on the runways. It was fun making it, and since I'm a bit of an insomniac, saw me through a few sleepless nights. Other non snoozy types take note- Pinterest is amazing if you are a turner and tosser. Love it. I doubt I'll win but it was fun to put it together through the lens of color, muses, and the like. Here's that one:

Think that's about it for now...hope you are enjoying the ch ch ch changes outside your window as well. It's good times. And that's what's up this Fall is in the air kind of Monday in good old New York. XO

DVF: I want it all.

Hi, Sunday. Had a nice dinner at home tonight with some friends and David's dad. It's been a fun weekend of seeing a great old friend of mine whose in the new blushes of full blown love and getting married soon- such a joy to see people you care about be so happy. What the world needs now...

In other news, I had a vicious allergy attack in the middle of the night last night so was up looking at pics from the shows. I saw some standouts for sure, but just now as I attempted to clean the house I was distracted by DVF's collection. Now let me say I have been somewhat dismissive of DVF for some time now- I'm not sure if I found it cliched, a bit too mainstream, and a favorite of the kind of girls I'm not a big fan of (the ones who endlessly talk about cocktails, wine, and boys). But wow. Just wow. This collection is a caravan of bohemian chic-full of the looks I live to wear in the warm months - what a transcendent collection full of loose and flowy and colorful pieces that almost all of us can wear with ease. I was wondering if a sense of the gypset would make its way into the collections- this being a time of unrest, wanderlust, and yearning for something a bit counterculture to stave off some of this conservative thinking we've seen of late. I'm a fan. A big, big fan. I adore the mermaidish turquoise, the requisite black and white prints that are fast becoming the big trend of the runways for Spring, and the black polka dot suit is everything to me. I also love all the long kaftan inspired pieces- the rust dress is a favorite as are all the dresses with pants. I'm a big fan of ethnic and boho chic and these looks take it up a notch to keep it fresh and not like an outtake from Sienna MIller's closet circa a few years ago. Genius.

Floppy hats off to Diane Von Furstenberg for knowing what women need- I love a collection where I can envision packing all of this in a suitcase and going somewhere amazing. Super beautiful, wearable, and sexy. Bravo. And that's what's up this late night Sunday edition a la Maven right here in the BK. There's a chill in the air, but there's a nice balm happening at DVF for Spring 2013. XO

Five early trends from Fashion Week

Phew, Friday you little arse kicker you. Khan has been having some itchy allergy stuff of late so after a 1 am trip to the emergency vet over fears of him itching his skin off, I'm a bit beat. i took him to a dermatologist today who's testing him for all kinds of stuff. My boy is truly Jewish- bad allergies and a bad tummy. Oy.

In other news, it's Fashion Week. I went to a couple of fun things for Fashion's Night Out and must admit I got super swept up in the melee. Cocktails, shopping, djs, sexy crowds? Um, yes please. Sure it was wacky but after living somewhere whose fashion sense was not my cup of Darjeeling, how could I not participate and admire all the lovely pretty ones running around everywhere? And I finally scored my Chantecaille Elephant compact I wanted, and it's every bit as gorgeous as I had hoped for. Also, I checked out the Target Pop Up by the HIgh Line and it was very well done in terms of the space itself. Kirna Zabete a bit of a disappointment- I bought a jumpsuit and a skirt, but word to the wise- size DOWN. The stuff runs huge. The best offerings from this particular iteration of high/low came from Odin- the men's stuff was kind of off the chain to be honest. Loved it. Let's see how it fits when sweet hubby of mine returns home from Miami tonight (you're welcome, darling).

But in typical maven form, I'm watching to see what's coming down the runways right here in New York, and I'm seeing some early trends emerging for Spring 2013. Between Khan's itching and paw biting, I've managed to view the shows online, and here's what I've deduced thus far- here's five for ya of what to expect come Spring 2013, when Obama begins his next four years (positive thinking, friends).

Black and white prints-  I'm spotting a ton of black and white prints, which is a great option for those scared of all matters print. Derek Lam's chic as all get out 10 Crosby Line showed mix and match black and white with a striped top while Honor showed a flowy frock in the yin/yang print. I love Kim Ovitz's abstract print, reminding me very much of Helmut Lang, who is clearly an influence on her downtown, minimal aesthetic. Jason Wu's black and white floral dress was a standout, and I can't help but feel designers are thinking about the universe in terms of extremes and opposites. With the impending election and all this talk over have and have nots, it stands to reason that black and white would be a big trend on the runways, and a wearable one at that. Oh and at Thakoon Addition, this gorgeous black and white gown is flowy, stunning, and very of the moment. Oh and if you're not a print type, black and white solids are pretty fetch too, like this standout from Jason Wu that's nipped in and peplumed and genius.

Sexy sobriety- Are designers feeling a bit of gloom and a time for more somber silhouettes? Perhaps they are, because frockists like Yigal Azrouel are exhibiting a sexy sober thing that's more monk than model. At John Patrick Organic, the black deep v dress is free of all artifice and quietly sexy. And Cushnie et Ochs sent out body con pieces with peekaboo touches that are more serious than wild and crazy and over the top. Is fashion sensing it's time to get serious or are they feeling a bit bummed out on the state of things? It's not the looks are depressing, they're just not exactly party clothes- maybe their sobriety is a nod to concerns about everything from the economy to global warming.  Or maybe it's just that simplicity is playing a key role in getting to a good place?

Midriffs are the new erogenous zone- Oh, ladies. Get thee to Pilates and do some extra crunches this Fall and Winter because the tummy is big news on the runways- from Kim Ovitz to Cushnie et Ochs to Peter Som's leopard two piece that is a new take on suiting, great abs required. Lets' see how this trend sells- it's certainly not for anyone over a certain age or those looking for a little coverage after a winter's worth of comfort food.

Muted pastels- I was obsessed with this season's Chloe and it's washed and muted pallette and this is a trend that is continuing into Spring 2013. From the lovely pink satin pants at Som to the satin skirted pink dress at Honor to See by Chloe, pretty shades of macaron have me wanting to run to Laduree. Love. Thinking this is a good color story to make its way over to the home- how gorgeous would a room full of these tones look in your casa? Or even better, mine. Oh and Peter Som is rocking two trends with his pastel dress- the light color and the peekaboo tummy.

Relaxed suiting- At 10 Crosby and John Patrick, a loosey goosey approach to suiting (jacket and pants) is a great way to be dressed up and profesh but still cool and laid back. As women are all over the news as they storm the corporate world, the broad shouldered Working Girl silhouette is long gone- all hail the pajama like chic of the new suit for Spring. Love.

Oh and as a bonus the big color story of royal blue- perhaps all our mania for the Queen is resonating across the pond here in the States because royal is a big hit for Spring 2013. G-d Save the Queen, and the American fashion industry along with it.

And that's about it for right this second. I'm going to check out The Sartorialist show at Danziger this weekend as well as my much anticipated Antonio Lopez show. Can't wait. My fav illustrator of all time and a huge influence on my fashion trajectory as a young art student. And that's what's up this fashion is alive and well kind of Friday in the NY. All the love for a great weekend. XO

Something for every woman from Zac Posen and Derek Lam

I'm dispensing with pleasantries because I'm excited about this awesome presentation by Zac Posen for his lower priced line, Z Spoke. Featuring Coco Rocha, who incidentally is becoming quite the social media star and role model for young girls everywhere, these photos are so incredibly glam and fresh and fun, it's hard not to fall in love with these very girly looks. Are they pieces that are cool, rock and roll, easy, and simple like I usually go for? Nope. But I love them anyway, because they're feminine and flirty and pretty and make me want to eat a cupcake. And I generally don't like cupcakes, but wow. Pretty as a picture these looks- transcending trends and whims and moments- because being a girl never goes out of style. I love the influence of classic French designers like Emanual Ungaro and Sonia Rykiel in the knit looks.I'm in love. And that's what I've got on the Zac front. He really gets the feminine mystique.

And also in lower priced line news, Derek Lam's 10 Crosby looks feature one of my favorite bloggers, Emily Weiss, of Into the Gloss, a beauty blog that should be at the top of your bookmarks when it comes to beauty news and reviews. She's a pretty girl (love her hair), and Mr. Lam's choices are good ones. That royal blue pants suit (royal blue being an early trend) is the END and his take on pajamas is quickly becoming his trademark, and it's a look I am a huge fan of. Just fabulous and it's all about a sexy ease that says I'm not afraid to be comfortable. And guess what? I'm not. And nor should you.

I love how both of these designers speak to the two sides of being a woman (oh and of course there's more than two)- the ultra femmed up sexy lady and the cool tomboyish easygoing chick. I can see it's going to be way fun to be of the femmed persuasion come Springtime, and I can't wait. Very excited with what I'm seeing so far, and can't wait to see what's in store. And that's what's up this fun fashion week in the 212. More to come, kids. More to come. XO

Rachel Comey gets comfy

Hiya hi hi.

I'm digging the presentation of Rachel Comey, whose downtown cool chick is just my style. I'm seeing some influence from the likes of Narcisco Rodriguez- especially in that peekaboo black dress with the spaghetti straps. What a sexy little piece that you can wear with a blazer or a cardigan in the day and then all on its own for a sexy nighttime is the right time look. I'm also liking the continuation of a print trend we've been seeing for several seasons- I'm calling it a tech print- it looks like outer space and it's digital looking and super cool. I like Comey's urban silhouettes that feel inspired by all those PYTs hanging out at Cafe Gitane in Nolita in the warmer months. I'm in love with the shorts suit in khaki and the white loosey goosey shirtdress feels like a great getaway dress. Oh and ps, you'll be seeing lots of white on the runways for Spring- I think designers are going with a shift in thought and an enlightened rebirth in 2013. I'm way into it.

And that's what's up since we last talked. More to come soon.

Gentlemen, start your (fashion) engines- John Patrick revving it up for Spring 2013

Good morning, Thursday. Khan and I are still in bed and after a long walk at 7 am, just about ready to get up and face the day. Feeling good after Clinton's speech last night too- admittedly his voice sounded a bit weak, but his message was just so damn strong. Loved it. Oh, and in case you've been hiding under a rock, it's FASHION WEEK. Spring 2013 is in the air, the tents are up, and fashion is about to have a big night out tonight. I'm not sure I'm going to make it to the festivities, but may attempt to check out the Target pop-up and try to get my mitts on some Kirna Zabete goodness. Wish me luck.

And as luck would have it, the shows are already in full swing and Style.com is posting all of the festivities.

On early trend watch, I'm calling royal blue as an important color for Spring 2013- maybe the Queen's Jubilee and London hosting the Olympics held some influence across the pond with American designers who are fully embracing this regal tone. I'm also seeing some great prints for Spring and an ease that American designers are known for- times are tough, so loosening up and taking it easy is kind of a no brainer type situation.

Early highlights for me are John Patrick's organic pieces- these are clothes I am dying to wear- that black deep v minidress is a piece I would probably wear every day. The relaxed take on suiting is top notch, as are the decidedly modern silhouettes. I bought a John Patrick tank dress this Summer and it feels like heaven on the body. Very keen on this designer and his chic take on simplicity. He epitomizes an effortless American approach to dress that is unfussy and so very cool. I'm a huge fan.

I'm going to have to do separate posts until I figure out how to get off of Posterous, the photo uploads are killing me with their sloth like slowness. I've got loads to show you from the first few shows, so please stay tuned.

And that's what's up this Spring has sprung in New York (sorta) kind of Thursday in the 212. All the love and XO.

On getting real

Hiya, Wednesday. The weather in New York is horrid today- soupy, hot, and rainy. I'm not a fan. But I won't allow the weather to deflate my spirits, because I'm lucky enough to be at a really cool event called the IFB (Independent Fashion Bloggers) conference right here in Soho, on that stretch of Mercer Street which, coincidentally, is a danger zone to you fashion types (Phillip Lim, Rag and Bone, Joe's Jeans, Zimmerman, etc.).

I'm feeling empowered by all the wonderful people here, of which 99% are women. (We are the 99% indeed). I started this blog as a creative outlet, to share with the world my thoughts on all the things that move me. I never intended to be the next big fashion blogger, and I probably never will be. But these girls here have a real shot at some sort of fashion world celebrity status. They are all very young, beautiful, and full of energy. I'm amazed at the camaraderie between them- the fact that if someone catches your eye here they say hello and ask how you are is not typically fashion world behavior. And the same things I don't like about this conference and these bloggers in general are the same things I love- the lack of polish, finesse, and to be honest, plan for the next iteration of this game. Sure to someone like me who's been around the block more than once this seems a bit unprofessional and unsavvy, but it's also refreshing to be around talented people that admit they're making it up as they go along, and just enjoying the very fashionable ride.  Oh and they're not breaking the rules, they're making them, one Celine handbag at a time.

And the other striking thing to me is the sense that a new era is dawning in fashion- one that is wholly democratic, inclusive, and accessible. And most of all, these young women are being given the opportunity to show their voices- who they are, how they see the world, how they like to express themselves. Many have argued that the business of fashion is a muddled and messy one for young girls- everything from poor body image to snobbiness to an exclusive air that is lost on everyone other than types with pedigrees and good last names. I'm happy to see that fashion 2.0 is all about female empowerment and expressing oneself- it's pretty exciting to watch this shift in action, and the democratization of fashion, something I've been in favor of for years with the whole high/low collaboration thing a la Target, is in no small part successful to the rise of fashion bloggers, who talk about how these clothes make them feel rather than just reporting the facts. How I wish back when I was a Journalism undergrad we had blogs- I always knew I could not be a hard reporter because I simply had too much to say, and often on my own behalf. Exciting times these- girl power is alive and well and wears designer shoes. And with everyone hemming and hawing about how entrepreneurs have taken a hit, I'd watch these peeps, and closely. They're doing it and doing it, and on their own terms- leaving jobs in the boardroom and starting businesses from their bedrooms.

And another thing that's striking as you watch panel after panel at this conference is how each speaker stresses the importance of having an authentic and personal voice- even if your numbers on your blog are not through the roof, having a voice that is all one's own is the name of the game- a voice that is real, authentic, and completely one's own. Which brings me to the DNR last night, and Mrs. Obama's amazing and chill producing speech.

As I watched her speak, I couldn't help but think about how badly the Republicans missed the boat when it comes to reaching women. Ann Romney tried to talk to all of us but failed in my book because she was reaching out to a nipped in waist, kid on each hip, pot roast serving Stepford wife, which is something I will never be. Cut to Michelle Obama- she of toned arms and conviction. The most important things in her life are her husband and her children, and somehow, I related to that because it was said with an authentic voice- with strength, passion, and wit. Michelle is a woman many of us would have no problem being- she is an individual who is quite simply, herself. You know where you stand with her, I imagine. And her speech set the tone for the convention and surely swayed some votes.

Today's communications, whether in advertising or politics or fashion, needs to be real. If you are a marketing type, you know that much is being made about personal brands and how important it is to get the balance right- on social media, in the C Suite, or how you present your unique collection of African necklaces. I'm very happy to live in an era where people are demanding something that is real. It's not about some old ideal of what it means to be a woman or human being that rekindles some idealistic notion of the American dream. In order to move forward, we can't go back- a slogan of the convention last night that bears relevance for us all. As I sit in this room full of hopeful young women looking to express themselves, I know that the only way to do this successfully is to just get real. Don't be afraid to be who you are- it's 2012 and either the world is going to end as predicted or as many spiritual types are saying, a new age of enlightenment is about to engage the universe in a new epoch. I'm going with the latter and hoping that an honest and authentic approach is going to save me from Mayan ruin. And though I may never be the next big blogger or have brands breathing down my neck to talk about their products online, it's cool. I'm happy to just say what's on my mind and hope you continue to be happy to read it.

Wherever you are today- in sticky New York or rainy Mumbai, just be yourself and feel empowered to speak your mind, regardless of the consequence. Republican, Democrat, Green Party, or fashionista- being authentic and true is the only way to get ahead. It's a post transparent age and right this very minute, it's just time to get real. And that's what's up this real deal Holyfield kind of Wednesday in NYC, yo. XO

A return to tradition, in fashion, not politics.

Good am, Tuesday.  I'm up early to go to a blogging conference after a very lovely weekend doing some very traditional Labor Day activities like beaching and bbq'ing. We joked in my family that we were doing very Republican activities and were the wholesome American family the Romneys and the Ryans and the Republicans were touting non-stop.

And speaking of Republican values, I watched ghe RNC, wincingly. I don't want to get overly political on this blog, but y'all know where I stand, and all this talk of family values and praising the Lord has me uncomfortable. Amazing to me how far we've come on one hand, and how far we could quickly fall back at the hands of these folks on the other. That's about all I'm going to say- I'm not a traditional gal when it comes to politics, but I'll tell you what, I sure can be when it comes to accessories (I know, quite the ridiculous segue way, but I'm finding ways to mix politics and fashion). And for that reason, I'm absolutely aswoon over Coach's offerings from their Legacy line, which recall a past asethetic yet somehow feel so right this very second. )That's old school Coach above, and this is new school, retooled Coach below).

A classic purse is something you simply can't go wrong with (shown above is the Penny)- and Coach's subdued and non-logoed bags are one part Ali McGraw in "Love Story" and many parts effortlessly chic. I'm also in love with the boots featured in the ad campaign for Fall, which would ramp up the class factor of all your chunky knits and opaque tights or skinny jeans. These pieces make me excited for Thanksgiving, and embracing my favorite season in all its crispy, leafy glory. I adore the classic brown, but could easily be persuaded for a most autumnal red like this duffel shape as well (Pumpkin spice latte, anyone?). Oh and the saddle bag Patricia in the classic brown? Hands down my fav. I've seen this shape all over the stores for Fall and it's on trend yet timeless at the very same time.

And lest you think you men (all two of you still reading this) are left out of this Coach classic equation, fear not. I've spotted some great bags for you too, particularly this striped duffel to pop in the back of your vintage Volvo wagon for weekends in the Berkshires. So as you can see, there ain't nothing wrong with a nod to tradition, heritage, and the classics. If you can keep my female and religious rights intact while doing so, I'm fine with it. Yet another reason fashion really is the answer. I'm cool with a return to the classics as long as they don't set us back. What I love about these pieces is that they are summoning a traditional shape, yet offer something for everyone, unlike the Tea Party, mind you.

And that's what's up this classic is cool kind of post Holiday I did marry fashion and politics in one piece kind of Tuesday in the city, baby. Maybe all we need is to get back to basics, as well as get back to work. All the love. XO

Oh and one more thing...

It occurs to me, as I try to figure out why this blog host is so sucky this week, that like many of you, I watched the RNC all week and feel a bit, well, perplexed (being kind). Between talking to empty chairs and dropping the Lord bomb one too many times to frozen smiles and empty promises (and some flat out lies), I began to think about a life in Denmark. And then I thought better of that, because no matter what,  I really do (with tears held back) love this country. We have to remember, especially this weekend, what makes this country great, and it's not the divisiveness, the traditional notion of family and marriage, or celebrity spokespeople. What makes this country great is our freedom- the fact that I cant talk about whatever I want on this blog, and the fact that we can have a voice when it comes to things we find wrong or unjust. I don't know what's going to happen in November, but I urge you to, this Labor Day, raise a glass or a beer or a burger to the soldiers who fought and continue to fight to protect us. And if all else fails, remember Jimi Hendrix was an American. Here is his most powerful Star Spangled Banner. Hang on to this one- it'll get you through all this madness and remember why we love the good old USA. Have a rock and roll and blessed Labor Day Weekend. All the love, and G-d Bless America- whoever your G-d or lack of one is, PS. I'm happy to pray to Jimi Hendrix. He never disappoints. XO

La Rentrée (a re-entry about re-entry)

Hi, Friday. I'm in a bit of the merde with my blog so wanted to repost this piece that captures all the inevitable buzziness of big city living after the Summer ends...hope you enjoy it. Posterous is being temperamental the past few days and I need to figure out why...hope you have a great long weekend and enjoy the below (repurposed) post- suppose everything old is new again...XO

Hi, Monday...the weather in Miami is glorious today. The lack of fog on my
Wayfarers indicates an absence of humidity. I'm simply loving it.

So this weekend I went deep into forensic mode and found even more cool
stuff to see, do, and spend money on in Paris. As I was on the hunt for even
more carbohydrates, fatty cheese, and great places to buy hats, I came
across this lovely blog- of one Badaude, an illustrator and writer based in
Paris. Badaude, according to her blog, means "a person given to idle
observation of everything with wonder or astonishment; a credulous or
gossipy idler". Immediately I sensed a kindred spirit...

While on her blog I found this adorable illustration perfectly capturing why
I love Fall, and she does too. I quote: " You can keep Paris in the
Springtime. The best season of all has to be early fall". In French, that
time of year in the city when everybody comes back from the summer, with a
tan and some hope and a new attitude is called la Rentrée, or the re-entry
into "life" if you will, after a lazy summer. I can recall that time of year
in Manhattan as my absolute fave- when new clubs and restaurants were
opening to accommodate those who spent the better part of the summer at the
beach, and the excitement that comes with welcoming back the masses to
lovely Fall weekends and crisp nights, before the winter's chill sends
everybody inside to hibernate. (Oh and let's not forget the Pumpkin Spice
latte at Starbucks. Its inevitable return always made my heart sing).

Badaude not only captures the feel of that magic time, but also the "look"
that accompanies it. Needless to say, it's beyond charming and chic. Oh and
PS, I am looking forward to seeing les looks of la Rentrée in less than a
week from today. I simply can't wait...

Hope you are having a lovely Rentrée wherever you may be. With shades of the
weather sweet spot that is Miami in the winter time, I know I am. Cause
that's what's up this refreshed and renewed Monday in the MIA. XO

(Oh and here is a link to that nice blog...it's fun to read and look at. And
her illos are a dream).
