Good morning, Tuesday. I can't help but miss Miami today. I'm cold. I admit it. I could use a little sunshine, a little reggae, and a little more sunshine right about now. I'll get through it, but really this is quite the winter. Formidable.
So you know I've been digging on my little advice column of late- I'm here for all of you and your fashion maladies or otherwise, and I'm happy to have received another question from a very glam and gorgeous friend of mine, looking for that trickiest of pieces- the lightweight jacket. See below:
Dearest Maven-
I’m spending a week down in good ole N’Orleans at the end of February and the weather will be tricky: fluctuating between 60 and 48 at night. I’m in desperate need of a lightweight coat that won’t be too cumbersome if I need to carry it, and gives me some style if I need it. I’ll be swapping between my travel uniform of all black skinny-jeans, long sweaters and kicks, (how else will they know I’m a New Yorker!) and my cocktail attire when we hit the fancier restaurants in town. So it, like me, needs to be up for anything! Totally at a loss. Help me M!
Now that's a tall order isn't it? I've done so much traveling back and forth to LA in my life and this has always been the question of questions- true LA a bit warmer than 60 during the day but that whole cold morning/cold night thing can be challenging, so of course it's not only just about the proper layers, but the right little outer shell/coat to make it all cute and such- traveling is so amazing when you have the right wardrobe. So fear not, friend. I've got some ideas for you, though I am admittedly jealous about going to New Orleans- I could use a real Sazerac right about now (so what that it's not quite yet 11 am, don't judge) and some good music. Lucky duck. I'm stuck in the land of the ice and snow.
Here are my ideas...some spendy, some not. Check 'em.
Kate Spade Saturday
two way coat, Saturday, $220. This coat is adorable and a twofer. Everybody loves a twofer. I love love love that you can make this a cute little jacket, or it's a more polished and tailored look for both day and night- running around the French Quarter by day and drinking Sazeracs at The Roosevelt at night. Heaven.
Monica Rose for Lovers & Friends cape, Neiman Marcus, $272. A cape is the PERFECT solve for tricky weather- layer underneath with a sweater, leather jacket, blazer, or bare arms for some drama. Since New Orleans has that voodoo vibe, a cape is perfect for a little bit of mystery and hocus pocus.
Long Jacket, Joe Fresh, $49. This is a cute lil coat- it comes in brighter colors which is not really my bag, but this is a great standard to layer with a sweater and pretty shirt, a thin leather piece, or even a denim jacket. Great piece, great price. Done and done.
Faux fur jacket, H&M, 79.95. I don't rolll anywhere, and I do mean anywhere, without a faux fur. Wear it on the plane. It's a wubby and it's so chic with everything. It's a must. Great for chilly nights and wonderful with a tee and jeans in the daylight. Rock and roll.
Single-breasted coat, H&M, $59.95. Love this little menswear coat- as you can see, I think the best thing you can do is buy a basic black piece for traveling- it goes with everything and will never disappoint. Goes well with saints marching in and everything else you can think of. Just don't wear eat while eating those beignets at Cafe Du Monde. Messy.
Leather sleeved anorak/trench/coat Love this trend. Love the mixed media thing...all price points are welcome here. Adorable and useful. Loads of options from different peeps.
Top to bottom:
Faux fur animal print coat, Topshop, $178. Love this. You can't go wrong with an animal print coat- goes beautifully with a wicked hangover, some bedhead, and a bloody mary/hair of whatever dog you fancy. Perfection. My top pick for what I'd bring but that's just me. I feel like New Orleans is funky and cool and eccentric- this coat is all that and more. Big sunglasses, leggings, high tops. Yep. And yep. Bonus points if you go vintage.
Crewneck coat, Zara, $119. Puffed sleeve. Tailored silhouette. Perfect travel piece.
Wool coat, Zara, $119. Great color, great little coat. Love it.
Burberry
Mountbarrow, Bloomingdales, $1,295. Yes I know. A fortune. But this shape is so new and cute from Burberry, and you will wear the hell out of it. It doesn't mean you should buy it, but you will use it year after year, if you still have a closet to put it in after you buy it...it's about a mortgage payment for anyone who doesn't live in NYC. Yikes. So good though- perfect for a little Garden District jaunt.
Emerson Fry
Graffiti coat, Emerson Fry, $475. Black and white. Can't go wrong. In love with this little coat. So smart (not cheap but great looking and easy to wear- great with a turtleneck and wide leg jeans or with a cute LBD and bare legs and heels and a bucket full of oysters at Felix's delicious oyster bar .
Welp that about does it for me. I hope you've enjoyed this week's "Ask the Maven". I'll break you off another slice next week. Cause that's what's up this dispensing advice is nice kind of Tuesday in the bone chilling tundra of New York City. Yours, in lightweight coats (a girl can only dream of such things). Send more questions to sherimaven@gmail.com! I'll answer 'em. XO
